How
to make a Diary
Materials:
- cardboard
- choice of construction
paper, fabric, or any material that would be good for making
a cover for the Diary.
- writing paper
- paper fasteners
- 2-3 inch wide
plastic or masking tape
- glue
- scissors
- hole punch
Directions:
- Cut two pieces
of cardboard 8 inches by 12 inches. The cardboard will be used
for the cover of your diary. These should be slightly larger
than the pages that will have your entries.
- Cut your choice
of cover material slightly larger than your cardboard covers.
Then glue the material to one side of each cardboard cover.
- Cut a one inch
strip from the left hand side of the front cover. This will allow
the book to fold open. Don't cut the back cover.
- Next lay the
two parts of the front cover beside each other. Leave a 1/4 inch
gap between the two front cover pieces.
- Use wide plastic
or masking tape to connect the 1 inch strip to the front cover.
When you do this, be sure to leave a 1/4 inch gap between the
two pieces. If you forget to leave enough space, your diary won't
open correctly.
- Glue a small
rectangle with a title you select for your diary.
- Punch three
holes in the front and back covers.
- Next, put the
front cover over the pages to be written on. Punch three matching
holes in these lined pages
- Now assemble
the front cover, lined pages, and back cover and insert a paper
fastener through each hole.
- Finally, fold
the front cover back and crease the fold.
***There are several
variations on how to make a book. If you have another method you
think will be sturdy enough for daily class use during the science
fiction unit by all means create your own.
