How to make a Diary

  1. Cut two pieces of cardboard 8 inches by 12 inches. The cardboard will be used for the cover of your diary. These should be slightly larger than the pages that will have your entries.
  2. Cut your choice of cover material slightly larger than your cardboard covers. Then glue the material to one side of each cardboard cover.
  3. Cut a one inch strip from the left hand side of the front cover. This will allow the book to fold open. Don't cut the back cover.
  4. Next lay the two parts of the front cover beside each other. Leave a 1/4 inch gap between the two front cover pieces.
  5. Use wide plastic or masking tape to connect the 1 inch strip to the front cover. When you do this, be sure to leave a 1/4 inch gap between the two pieces. If you forget to leave enough space, your diary won't open correctly.
  6. Glue a small rectangle with a title you select for your diary.
  7. Punch three holes in the front and back covers.
  8. Next, put the front cover over the pages to be written on. Punch three matching holes in these lined pages
  9. Now assemble the front cover, lined pages, and back cover and insert a paper fastener through each hole.
  10. Finally, fold the front cover back and crease the fold.

***There are several variations on how to make a book. If you have another method you think will be sturdy enough for daily class use during the science fiction unit by all means create your own.
