This lesson was developed as part of the Warrensburg, Missouri School District's WebQuest Academy project, a State funded Competitive Technology Grant.
This webquest is intended for first grade students to get a basic understanding of penguins: the types; why they are birds but don't fly; where they live; where they fit into the food chain; and how they keep warm or cool.
This lesson is anchored in first grade science and involves art to a lesser extent. The lesson can easily be extended to students in grades two and three.
Students learn about the habitat and characteristics of penguins as a result of this lesson. They will work as partners to answer questions and construct projects within the process portion of the quest.
Students should follow the directions on the page and complete the assignments as given.
The following items are needed to implement this lesson:
One teacher is needed to implement the lesson. Of course, aides or parents would be helpful in assisting students do the projects, answer questions, and maneuver through the pages or the web.
Students who are successful with this webquest will answer at least 80% of the questions on the worksheets correctly and produce the activities completely and neatly.
