"The
objective was to get a nationwide demonstration of concern for
the environment so large that it would shake the political establishment
out of lethargy... it worked... the people cared."
--
Senator
Gaylord Nelson (on starting the first Earth Day in 1970)
Here's Your
Situation:
You
will be participating in a team-wide recycling and waste reduction
project called "T's for Trees." Because you will
be responsible for promoting this environmental public awareness
program, you need to find out as much as you can about recycling
and various ways students can help.
Here's Your
Quest: After identifying your
role, you will conduct research to find the answers to the following
questions:
- What is solid waste management?
- What are some ways we
can recycle?
- What are students doing
to help?
Here's Your
Job: Use your information to
determine how students can Make A Difference in their community.
You Will:
- read and evaluate articles
about recycling and waste management;
- explain how effective
recycling/reduction projects around the nation work;
- find ways you can start
to Make A Difference in your community;
- present your findings
to other students; and
- write a "Can Do"
essay discussing the benefits of recycling and outlining ways
kids can help out in their community.
