How To Do Your Brochure

The job listing says you should have good computer skills, and making a brochure is an excellent way to show off those skills. After all, you will need to be able to get images from the web, add those images to your AppleWorks document, and show off your word processing skills. Wow! That's a lot! You'd better get started.

Read all of the directions before you try getting started. It is always best to know what you need to be doing. (Refer to your handout that has this same information on it.)

1. On the field trip you will be in groups of ten of your choice. (You will sign up in math class.) As a group you will decide who will complete a brochure about the following (two people for each topic):

The Governor and the Mansion
The Capitol and the people who work there
Important People in Jefferson City
Buildings of Jefferson City
Fun Facts

2. Now that you know what you are responsible for, it is time to begin the brochure creation. Let's get started.

a. Use your mouse and go to the top right corner of your computer screen. This is the finder. Click and drag down to "hide internet" and let go. You should be looking at your computer's "desktop" now.

b. Open the folder that says "programs."

c. Double click on AppleWorks to get that program started.

d. Choose word processing and click okay.

e. Your word processing folder is now open. Look at the top of your computer screen. Click on "file" and then click on "page setup".

f. Click on landscape and click on "okay".

g. Now we need to turn your word processing page into three columns. Above your word processing page you should find a ruler. Either directly above or below the ruler you will see a place to change the number of columns. Right now it says one. Click once to the right of the number and it will create a second column. Click again and you will create a third column. (If you don't see the columns created on your page, you did not create a column. You probably changed the number of blank lines you get each time you hit the return key.)

h. Go to your "finder" in the top right corner of your computer screen and click on it. Click on the Internet.

3. Let's get started on finding pictures from the Internet to use for your brochure. Your brochure should have at least three pictures. Remember what your brochure will be about. Use the links given below your brochure title to find pictures.

a. When you find a picture you would like to use (pay attention to copyright information), click on the picture and hold down until a menu opens up on your screen. Keep holding down on your mouse.

b. Keep holding down on your mouse while you scroll down to "copy this image." Let go of mouse.

c. Go to your "finder" in the top right corner of your computer screen and click on it. Click on AppleWorks.

d. You are now back to your AppleWorks brochure which is already set up in three columns. Go to "window" at the top of your screen and select "show tools." This will make a tool screen pop up on the left side of your screen.

e. Click on the "arrow" button in the top left of the tool screen. This means you can paste your Internet picture as a picture and be able to move it around.

f. Click on "edit" at the top of your screen and select "paste." Your picture is now probably very large and not where you want it. Don't worry! In the next step we are going to fix it!

g. Scroll down your brochure, if necessary, to find the bottom right corner of your picture. Click and hold on it. You can now change the size of your picture by dragging to the desired size.

h. To move your picture in to a brochure column, click and hold on the center of your picture and drag it to where you want it.

i. Go find two more pictures and repeat the steps.

4. Now it is time to add your written information around your pictures.

a. On the tool screen click on the "A" next to the arrow. That lets you type.

b. You can go up to "Window" and pull down to "hide tools." That makes your tool screen disappear. Remember, you need that back if you decide to go get another picture from the Internet.

c. Notice it puts your cursor at the top left of your brochure. You can begin typing if you don't have a picture in the way. If you have a picture at the top, you will need to hit the "return" key as many times as necessary to move your cursor down the page past your picture.

d. You are working on a regular word processing document, so you can do all of the things as usual----center, make things bold, etc. Use the web sites where you found your pictures to find the information to include. Remember, this must be in your own words!

e. When you are finished typing in the first column, you will probably need to hit the "return" key as many times as necessary to move your curson to the top of the second column. Begin typing as necessary. Repeat to get to the third column.

5. You know how to make your brochure now. Good luck and be creative!!

6. When finished with your brochure, you will need to save it in my folder on the server. Follow the directions to get this done.

a. Go up to the finder in the top right corner of your computer screen. Click and pull down to
