Two American Revolution Novels

Synopsis - April Morning

n April 19th, 1775 Adam Cooper, aged fifteen, signed the muster of the Lexington militia. This book gives what a single day's life was like fighting in battles for this American dream.

Author - Howard Fast

Howard Fast has written many novels about the things that have happened in history. Of his many novels more than half of them have dealt with the American Revolution. He has said before that he is drawn to many events in history. In other words, he loves it to the point that he wants to have students read his works, and get an understanding of what life was like before they were around.

The book, April Morning, is one of Howard Fast's favorite books. The reason he likes this one is because he feels he was successful in telling the reader about the human condition at that time.

Synopsis - An Enemy Among Them

A young Hessian soldier questions his loyalty to his king after fighting with the British in America during the Revolutionary War and spending time as a prisoner in the home of a German American family in Pennsylvania.

It's December of 1776. In a cozy Pennsylvania farmhouse, Margaret Volpert listens as her father and his friends argue about the war with England, already perilously close to their homes. "Bad enough that the king is using his Redcoats for stealing from us," one neighbor says. "But the Hessians! Every week another boatload of those miserable mercenaries arrives!"

Aboard the Hessian ship Mermaid, bound for the port of New York, Christian Theodor Sigismund Molitor, a private in the Jager Regiment von Knyphausen, looks out toward the American shore. What awaits him in this new land, where he has come to fight against the rebellious colonists?

Before long, the paths of Margaret and Christian will cross in a most surprising way. They will be forced to confront questions of loyalty to their country, family, and long-held ideals, questions that will bring into their lives changes both painful and exciting.

Authors - Deford and Stout

Deborah H. Deford and Harry S. Stout both grew up outside Philadelphia where many American Revolution battles took place. Even some of their family members were in that war. An Enemy Among Them is their first novel together. In this story both authors wanted you to feel as though you were there. They also wanted you to realize how hard decisions were about loyalty to your government, yourself, and many loved ones.
