LATITUDE AND LONGITUDE Raelyn R.

Latitude and Longitude is basically a way to read maps easier. Latitude and Longitude, imaginary lines that encircle the earth from east to west and from north to south. The basic latitude line is the equator, which is a great circle. Each longitude is drawn from pole to pole, forming half of a great circle. The equator is 0" latitude, and is shown passing across South America and Africa. Latitude and Longitude helps you in all subjects, including math, social studies, language, reading. Say you are in science and doing an animal report, and you are telling the class where that animal is from, you could just tell them the lines of longitude and latitude and they could find where that animal is exactly. Also in reading or language you would have to find a word in longitude and latitude on a map or a grid. In social studies you just basically find cities or exact places on the world map, using longitude and latitude. You can always remember longitude and latitude by, long is always east and west, and that is longitude. To remember latitude, just remember lat south and that would be latitude. Longitude and latitude also helps Scientist figure out the planets specified by latitude, longitude and altitude. Air pilots, as well as ships , navigators define location by latitude and longitude. Latitude and Longitude were systemized in the 17 century (1600s) by Rene Descartes, who used them for a variety of science. If we didn't have Longitude and latitude we would have difficulty in our world trying to do things.
