Have you ever thought about clocks? What were the first ones? Who were they used by? Who invented the first modern clock? Well, in this report you will find out about people and their clocks and different styles and kinds!

Sundials-

Were the first forms of telling time. Sumerians were the first people to use them. To use the Sundial they would measure the length of shadows to see how mech time had passed. The Egyptians also used Sundials to tell time. The Sundial had three parts; the circular dial, needle, and style (gnomon).

Water clocks-

Were invented by the Egyptian's, and then the Greeks with more advanced ones. The Water Clock were a bucket with a hole in th bottom. Egyptian's invented them but the Greeks had more advanced ones.

Hour Glass-

Was the first time clock that did not depend on the weather. It was 2 bubbles connected in the middle with one bubble full of sand. They would turn the Hour Glass over and when the bottom bubble had filled up 1 hour had gone bye.

Modern Clocks-

Today have three parts; the power source, pace regulator, and numbers to show time. The pendulum was made between 100-1300 a.d. in Europe. Clock towers were also built to. The first one was the STRAUSBOURG CATHEDRAL and still works today. 1577 the first minuete hand was invented by Jost Burgi. In 1656 the Pendulum was put into clocks. In 1504 the First portable clock was invented ,the Watch and only about 50 were made at that time.

Dutch clocks-

Were made mostly from 1596 to 1850. European clocks are much similar to Dutch clocks becuase of Dutch traders would trade the clocks.

Cuckoo Clocks-

Were the first made in 1750 by Frantz Anton Kettener. It was made in a village near Triberg , Black Forest. He produced the cuckoo bird song, with two different notes. The clock industry developed.

James moss-

A famous clockmaker and has a reputation for his excellence. He has restored and conserved variouse clocks. Because of his unique ability he draws clients from all over the U.S.

Robert Potts-

Is a clockmaker. He started making clocks in 1790. His son William Potts set up his own business in 1833. After a long period of clockmaking of every type, the business became a manufacterur institute for every type of clock. Three of Robert's sons joined in on the clock making business.
