The
clock is one of the greatest influencel discoveries of history in the western
science. The division of time into regular predictable units is fundamental
to the operation of society. Even in ancient times, humanity reconginized
the necessity of an orderly system of choronolgy.
Sundials were one of the most earliest forms of telling
times. One of the first ancient 0 people to use sundials were the Sumerians.
They divided the day into 12 parts and each part was about 2 hours long.
They measured the length of the shadow to determine how much time had passed.
No one really knew the Sumerians kept track of time. Some think for religious
reasons.
The Main clock used today was developed in 100-300 A.D. in Europe (although
some think in China). The First clock weight gravity pulled the weights
which moved the gears. That is how it kept track of time. And the first
tower clock was built between 1300-1500. The hour glass is basically 2 bubbles
with a narrow middle. Wood is used to close off each end of the hour glass. The
sand measured and sealed and is turned over. This type of clock was the
only one that didn't depend on the weather. It is the only clock used for
short periods of time.
The clock was invented to set dates, tell times, and so the world wouldn't
be confused all the time. I think the clock was one of the most important
inventions to this world.
