The Beginning of the Breeze
In the dense forest where mushrooms were magical, moss grew soft and light, and baby deer were wild and tame, there was a nymph who lived in the forest. A nymph by the name of Breezair. Oh what a lovely nymph she was indeed!
Breezair loved to come in the middle of the forest and watch the baby deer and their families. Breezair , despite her beauty, was also very clumsy. It came natural though, she could not help it, no matter what she did.
Her worst fault of clumsiness was her blowing and sneezing. Breezair was the daughter of the beautiful, fair goddess Aphrodite. Yes, Aphrodite did have a child. A child whom only the god and goddesses knew about. So young Breezair didn't have any friends.
One day Aphrodite announced to her daughter to freshen up. They were going to attend a dinner party hosted by Zeus. The party was going to be for the gods, goddesses and all their children.
Breezair went to go freshen up and put on her finest dress. It was hard to decide since she had so many!
Finally, after the sun had set, Hermes, the god of messages came to fetch Aphrodite and Breezair.
As Hermes, Aphrodite, and Breezair were in the chariot, their faces were hot and smudged because there was no cool air.
When they finally arrived at Mount Olympus they sat down to have dinner.
Breezair was clumsy in everything she did.
All of the sudden, Breezair let out a huge blow that made the room cooler for an instant. The blow of air also made soup bowls topple over and it knocked over glasses and drinks.
Everyone in the room was pleased that the air had turned cooler. Zeus was upset with Breezair because she had ruined his biggest dinner party ever!
"I am sorry grandfather," replied Breezair in a quiet voice. By calling him grandfather Breezair would earn more respect from Zeus.
'I know you are," replied Zeus in his great thundering voice, "but I am still upset with you. I am not going to kill you since your mother is queen of love and beauty, but I am going to make you go to sleep for eternity and make your spirit go all over the earth."
Breezair again apologized to Zeus and said a long, sad farewell to her mother.
Hermes took a blindfold and put it in his bag. After Breezair was ready and all the horses saddled up, Hermes put on the blindfold and let the horses guide them on throughout the earth.
After the fourth day of riding in the chariot, Hermes told Breezair to get out. Since Hermes had on the blindfold he did not know the majestic black and white horses had stopped in front a small building with one room.
Breezair said farewell to Hermes as he left slowly. Breezair walked hesitantly up to the building. When she got to the door, she opened it and saw a bed in the middle of the room. A bed fit for a princess.
Breezair was too sad to lay down. She sat on the bed in sorrow. She really wanted Zeus to forgive her. Breezair was so upset that she decided to kill herself.
Breezair went outside and got a branch off a tree and sharpened it on a nearby rock. As soon as it was sharp, she prayed to the mighty gods and plunged the branch in her heart!
As soon as she had done so, back at Mount Olympus, Artemis, protector of unmarried women felt a pain in her chest. After she had recovered she told Zeus and Aphrodite what Breezair had done. It was a moment of sorrow.
Back in the forest Breezair had taken the stick out of her chest and had walked back to the small building and had laid down in the bed. She then died a peaceful but painful death.
All of the sudden there was a nice calm wind all about the earth. The wind was soft and light and cool. Everyone was overjoyed by this cool breeze, they wanted to know what it was called.
"Let Aphrodite decide for herself," replied Zeus.
"I would like to call it breeze, for my only child Breezair," replied Aphrodite quietly. "My daughter was very gentle and no one had to tell her to be."
To this day a breeze is a very gentle and calm wind, and if you go outside on the night of Breezair's birthday,(no one knows except the gods and goddesses) you can hear her whisper through the trees, Breezair.
Also because Zeus was very upset with himself that every time he feels a breeze he thinks of Breezair and makes a wind more terrible that is so fierce and violent that it is now known as a hurricane.
