How the Beaver Got a Flat Tail

By Joe

Beaves the Beaver had a very beautiful, soft, fluffy tail. He was very proud of it. He bragged to the animals that he had the most beautiful tail in the world. He even went so far once that he said his tail was better than all the gods and goddesses' softest and best clothes put together as one.

This did not please Zeus at all. He was already mad at Beaves for bragging just a little about his tail. Now Beaves said he was better than the gods!

Beaves continued to brag about his tail. One day he went to the statue of Zeus and tried to get the people who made the statue to knock it down and make one of his beautiful tail.

When Zeus heard this news he decided he'd had enough of Beaves, and Beaves must be punished. So Zeus sent for Hermes. Hermes came and Zeus told him to get in his chariot and run over the beaver's tail with it.

Hermes ran over the beaver's tail just like he was told to, and Beaves became very depressed because he lost his beautiful, fluffy tail, and gained an ugly flat one.

Then one day Athena, the goddess of wisdom, came and told him he could use his flat tail to warn other beavers that something is coming.

This made Beaves very happy. He never bragged so much that Zeus would want to change his tail again because Beaves knew his next tail would be ten times worse.
