As you learned from your research, the setting tells the reader where and when the story takes place. It also creates the mood. A setting does not have to stay the same in a novel. A character often moves from setting to setting, indicating changes in the story. In creating a setting for a story, an author must consider the social, cultural, and physical environment where the action will take place. For example, think about what each of these things tgells us about time and place. And think about how they would change if the time and place changed.
- What are the schools like?
- What do people do for fun?
- What kind of sporting activities do they have?
- What do the characters wear?
- What are the houses like?
- What do people eat?
- What is the structure of the family?
- Are there computers? TVs? VCRs?
- What is the mode of transportation (horse and buggy, spaceship, car)?
- What kind of government is there?
- What is the weather like?
Your next task is to make a post card based on your character. Imagine that you take a trip to the place where your story takes place. Write a postcard to someone at home telling them what you see and do. Address the postcard to a friend. Remember to plan first because you don't have much room. Draw something for the front of the postcard. Then write your address and a brief message on the back. Refer to the questions above if needed. You can obtain a copy of the scoring guide by clicking here. Remember to print a copy of this to staple to the front of your postcard.
You are about to embark on your last culminating adventure. I know that you have worked hard and truly understand how the antagonist(s), protagonist(s), setting, and plot all work together to create the elements of literature. Your last adventure will involve all of the elements of literature that you have researched thus far in a project that I hope you will enjoy.
Your last adventure is to make a gameboard that reflects all of the elements you have studied. Please use the resources below to help you make your gameboard.
