Teacher Information Page

This fund raising adventure has been created for grades 5-8. The primary focus of this activity is mathematics and economics. The students will make several decisions based on weather, it is important that someone uses this link http://www.weather.com/outlook/homeandgarden/garden/weather/tenday to determine the precipitation amount for Saturday and Sunday at the chosen town that has a fair grounds. This site only gives the previous day's rain amount, so it must be checked on Sunday and Monday. After this has been done the students can complete their worksheets and determine if they were able to raise the proper amount of money to purchase the laptops.
This iAdventure could take approximately 3 class periods.
Background Information & Story Abstract
An iAdventure is a way of teaching students important concepts and skills by involving them in a story line about one or more characters (fictional or real).
This iAdventure has a seventh grade class deciding that they want to raise money to purchase laptops, Apple iBooks, for each of the students and one for their teacher. How much money needs to be raised? They have decided to hold a two day Rock concert festival as the fund raiser. The first decision that must be made is how much to charge concert goers. Luckily they have information from prior concerts to guide him. His class has already negotiated with 4 bands, these bands will play for the entire weekend for 20 dollars per participant, with a minimum of $10000. The town is donating the fair ground site and the uncovered bandstand. A major concern and the basis of many of the decisions is, "Will it rain the weekend of the concert, which just happens to be this weekend. Choices to be made, should they provide a shelter for the band. Another major decision to be made concerns protecting the attendees from rain. All decisions have a cost attached.
What makes this unique is that after the weekend of this iAdventure you will know if it rained and the amount of rainfall (which is very important), this information will allow your class then to complete the adventure and tally their results.
Curriculum Standards
This iAdventure covers strands in Mathematics and Social Studies.
Resources Needed
Computers with Internet access are needed.
Assessment
This is a results-based adventure with each decision and then the weather that follows determining if the student team reaches their fund raising goal or not. The worksheet and their paper will allow you to assess the learning that has been achieved.
