Introduction

You will be asked during this adventure to help Travis and his class (seventh grade) raise money so all his classmates will be able to purchase iBooks (laptop computers) for next year.  You will use internet resources and your knowledge of Mathematics and Social Studies to aid him in this quest.
A Rock Festival Fund Raiser
Travis, his teacher and his classmates have decided that they want to raise money to purchase laptops, Apple iBooks, for each of the students and one for the teacher.  That would require 21 iBooks.  How much money needs to be raised?  Please go to Apple website to determine how much money Travis and his classmates need to raise.  Travis needs to also decide the type of iBook to purchase. Enter the Apple store to answer these questions.  Now record this on your worksheet.

Travis and his class have decided to hold a two day Rock concert festival as the fund raiser.  The first decision that must be made is how much to charge concert goers.  Luckily Travis has information from prior concerts to guide him.  His class has already negotiated with 4 bands, these bands will play for the entire weekend for 20 dollars per participant, with a minimum of $10000.  The town is donating the fair ground site and the uncovered bandstand.

Information on previous concerts, cost per participant versus attendance can be found here.

Now make a decison on cost and the projected attendance.  Now record this on your worksheet.

Will it Rain or Not

Travis is very concerned that it may rain the weekend of the concert, which just happens to be this weekend.  He and his class have several choices to make.  First choice, should they provide a shelter for the band for 1 day (either Saturday or Sunday) or both.  The cost of the shelter for one day is $2000 and for both days $3500, if Travis makes the wrong decision, it rains more than .1" in a day, the band can't play and the concert will be canceled for the day.  1/2 of all the money will be refunded.

Travis, his teacher and the entire class must decide what to do by checking the weather forecast for this weekend.  Please check the forecast for the town nearest to you that has a fair grounds (recall this is where the concert will take place).
