It is an ordinary day at school. You notice the typical stuff: buses in the school parking lot, hurried teachers entering the building and energetic kids waiting for the front doors to open. Teachers and students alike would assume that today would be a day like all other days. At least that is the thought this morning.

Just before lunch, however, the mood of the day changes suddenly. The principal announces over the intercom, "Attention! Attention! We have an environmental crisis at hand. All trained Environmental Investigations Specialists please report to my office immediately." It is now that you realize today will be a very long day.

You and your classmates arrive at the principal's office within minutes. A look of worry is on the faces of everyone gathered there. The whispering voices become silent as the principal introduces Special Agent Ecosaver. Special Agent Ecosaver reaches into a black brief case and pulls out a piece of tattered paper. Upon closer inspection, you realize that the paper is in fact a ransom note.

Who knew at the beginning of the year that you would actually be facing an environmental issue such as this? It seemed like just yesterday when you and your classmates were sitting in science class learning about ecosystems, food webs and environments. Now you must use your knowledge, use what you have learned in science class to stop Dr. Naturehater from forever changing ecosystems as we know them. The job ahead of you is important. Pay close attention to the information received at each web site. Remember to use the Information Collection Sheet as you progress. But most of all, work as a team. Maine and Missouri need you!

Special Agent Ecosaver has informed the group that Dr. Naturehater is planning to attack the environments of both Maine and Missouri. It will be impossible for you to protect both states. Therefore, your first job is to decide which state you will defend. Visit the web sites suggested. Take notice of the climate, the environment, and any other information that is important to you. Write down at least three reasons supporting your decision on the Information Collection Sheet. Remember that these reasons should be based on facts about the chosen state as opposed to your opinions about them.
