Traveling Through Time
With Professor Dan Smart & Whiskers
You are about to join Professor Dan Smart and his talking cat Whiskers on a journey through time. Together you will help the good people of Knoburg decide what style cathederal to build. You will be accessing various web sites to study different architectural styles, construction methods, and time periods. With the help of your web research, you will be able to tell the good people of Knoburg what type of cathederal you believe they should build.

Scientist Professor Dan Smart and his orange talking tabby cat, Whiskers, were sleeping soundly in the professor's bedchamber.  When suddenlyÖ

Knock, knock, knock.  "Are you there Professor Smart?"
Professor Smart and Whiskers were awakened abruptly from their sound slumber.

     "What was that noise, Whiskers?"

"Someone is at the door, Professor," Whiskers replied.

"Professor Smart, are you there?"  said a man at the door.

"Yes, just a minute," the professor answered as he bounced out of bed while reaching for his glasses and white lab coat.  As Professor Dan Smart opened the door, he recognized the pudgy, fashionable man that was standing on the other side of the threshold.

"What can I do for you, Mayor Daily?" asked the Professor.

"Our fair town of Knoburg needs your help Professor.  An anonymous donor has given our town five million dollars to build a cathedral, but we do not have the expertise or knowledge to design one," explained Mayor Daily. "And the money is only allowed to be used to construct a new cathedral."

"Well," said Professor Smart, "it sounds like we will need to do some research about building styles and construction methods.  I will get back in touch with you after Whiskers and I get some information together so that some good decisions can be made."

The Time Machine
After Mayor Daily left, Professor Smart and Whiskers made their way to the back room, the location of their time machine.

"We will need to take a look at different architectural styles and construction methods from early and late time periods," the Professor said thoughtfully, adding, " Well Whiskers, what time period should we set our time machine for - AD.500 in Rome or AD.1500 in Paris?

"Well...what do you think Professor?" Whiskers replied and he jumped right in, making himself comfortable in his specially made leather reclining cat seat, complete with back massager and cat nip; meanwhile, Professor Smart carefully set the dials forÖ

You should look at the following web sites. This research will help you choose either the earlier architectural styles or the more modern. Before you start researching the two time periods below go to the following linked page and fill in the necessary  information as you locate it or get a hard copy from your instructor. All of the information needed to fill in the worksheet is provided by the linked web sites.

"Now that we have a basic understanding of architectural structures, we will be able to make an informed decision about which time period to concentrate on Whiskers," stated Professor Dan Smart. "What direction do you think we should go Whiskers?"

"I don't know Professor," exclaimed Whiskers."I'm only a talking cat, you choose!"
