Introduction

Do you like President Bush?  What about Bill Clinton?  Would you have voted for him?  Who did your parents vote for, or did they vote at all?   Many people feel very strongly about who should be president.

Unfortunately, not many people vote.  This is especially true of young people.  The 2000 U.S. Census said that more than two thirds of 18- to 24- year olds do not vote.  Some people don't think it matters if they are involved, but this iAdventure will show you some of the individuals who made a difference.  Some people don't know enough about the issues or the candidates, but this iAdventure will give you some valuable resources that contain all the information you need to decide.

What is an iAdventure?  In an iAdventure you participate in the story, helping the characters make good choices. Fortunately, you have access to all kinds of information on the internet to help you make those choices.  This iAdventure will allow you to use some of the great resources from the Internet to help you and your friends learn about political issues and how to be involved in politics.

Throughout this iAdventure you will need to fill out your worksheet.  Worksheet instructions will be written in white.  For example:  Put your name on your worksheet.  Now that your name is on your worksheet you are ready to begin.

Before you begin, go back to the first paragraph and click on the word that is underlined and in color.  It will take you to the glossary, where you can find meanings to several words related to the topic.

Our Story

Johann and his family moved to the United States several years ago.   Johann is very excited because he just passed his citizenship test.  Heís very excited about becoming an American.  Next November, he will be able to vote.  He is even thinking about becoming a politician after he goes to college so he wants to learn more about politics.
Johannís friend, Jinhwan, is only 15.  He also plans to become a U.S. citizen in a few years.  Jinhwan doesnít want to be a politician, but he knows it is important to vote and be involved.  He is already concerned about several political issues that affect his family.  In a few years he will he will be able vote as well, so he needs to learn about the issues too.

You must choose

Because you are their friend and classmate, Jinhwan and Johann have both asked for your help as they find out more about politics.  First, you must decide who to help.  To do that, it is good to find out more about what immigrant Americans have done in politics.

Johann wants to work as a politician.  Many immigrants have had successful careers in politics.  Two of them are listed below:  Henry Kissinger and Madeline Albright. Please pick one of these famous politicians.   On your worksheet answer the questions about him or her.

Johann doesn't want to be a politician.  But he can still do many important things.  Many people, including minorities and immigrants, work very hard to support political issues or candidates even though they are not politicians.  They are called activists.  Two famous activists were Albert Einstein and Cesar Chavez.  Read about one of them and answer the questions about him on your worksheet.
