This iAdventure was designed for grades 5 and up.
This iAdenture was designed to help
students gain knowledge about the nine planets that make up our solar system.
The students' mission is to research either the inner planets or outer
planets and create a brochure about one of the planets that they think
Alex the Astronaut should take his crew to. As students conduct
their research, they will record information into a top secret notebook
that will later be turned into NASA for evaluation. For their final product,
students will develop a “traveler’s brochure” for one of the planets they
have researched. In their brochure, they will discuss why they think that
Alex should visit this planet, as well as provide information about the
planet. This leaves open the option to compare the planets to one another.
Students will also present their brochure to the class, and then compare
their reasoning. I feel that this iAdventure could be an effective way
to start off a lesson about the planets.

Information that should
be recorded in the completed
notebook:
*About the inner and outer planets:
1.
Which planets are include in the inner planets?
2.
Which planets include the outer planets?
3.
What makes the two groups different?
*About each induvidual planet:
1.
What is the size of this planet? Density? Mass?
2.
How many satellites (including moons and asteroids surrounding) does this
planet have?
3.
When and how was the planet discovered, and by whom?
4.
Is there anything unusual about the planet?
5.
Have there been any explorations of this planet? Are there any planned
for the future? Explain.
6.
What is the atmosphere like on this planet? (Include temperature)
7.
What is the terrain like on this planet?
8.
How far away from the Sun is this planet? The Earth?
Also,
students should write a little about their experience "training" for NASA,
or
anyhting else that they found from their research that they might consider
including in their brochure.
Evaluation Sheet for "Traveler's Brochure":

| Overall information is useful/relevant. | Information is not useful or relevant. | Information is somewhat useful/relevant. | Information is very useful and relevant to assignment. |
| Total Points: | ______/25 |
As far as the traveler's brochure format, I recommend that you let students decide what media they want to use. Give examples, such as a book or pamphlet. And make sure to give guidelines of what you want on each page and how to organize it. Here is a suggestion for a book or pamphlet:
Page 1 (front page): Have students draw out the name of the planet and what the planet looks like.
Page 2: Have students give an overview of the inner and outer planets and what makes them different.
Page 3: Have students give facts about the planet. Have there been any explorations of this planet? If yes, explain. If no, explain why not.
Page 4: Why should Alex the Astronaut visit this planet, and not one of the others?
Page
5: Have students write about what they did for their NASA training to become
a member of Alex's Crew.
