Welcome!  You must be the member of the Southwest Apache tribe.  Since you are such a young member of this tribe you are just learning how much work it takes to stay alive.  You have watched and helped your mother work the land to provide the fruits and vegetables your family needs to grow.  She has also shown you how to make some really neat pottery and jewlery.  Your mother is not the only one who shows you the ways of this life, your father also shows you many interesting things.

He has shown you how to make bows and arrows.  He has also shown you how to make arrowheads to attach to the end of sticks to make different tools.  By far, the favorite thing your father has taught you is how to hunt the animals of the land.  You love to watch your father and the other older males of the tribe chase down a herd of bison during a hunt.  You are much too young to hunt them yet, so you stick to the smaller game, such as rabbit and squirrels.

You, your sister, and brother love living with this tribe, but unfortunately, your parents have told you that many of the tribe members have fallen ill with the diseases brought over by the white men.  The tribe is going to have to split up into small groups and choose bigger tribes to join.  If your family does not do this, they might not survive.

You are going to miss many of your friends from your tribe, but you know it is for the best.  Your parents sit you down in the tepee tonight and tell you they want you to help them decide where you are going to live.  Your father has narrowed down the choices to the plains or the woodlands because of the resources available in those areas.  It is now up to you to research the different areas and decide which move will best fit your family.  Once you have chosen your location, you hope some different tribes will extend a welcome to join their tribe, as it is very important to your family's survival.

Your first decision lies here.  Use this research guide to help you research the two groups and decide what the best move is for your family.
