| Welcome to The Outsiders iAdventure Teacher Page. This
unit is primarily for middle school level students and was designed to
be utilized in the content area of communication arts. Be
prepared to spend up to two weeks working on this project.
Although the project was geared for a culminating activity, it could
easily be broken into parts: prereading, during reading, and post
reading. First, students could work through the background page
as a prereading activity. Second, students could read through the
novel until about chapter seven, collecting data as a reporter. Third,
students could work through the
remainder of the iAdventure, and last, students could finish reading
the novel. Afterwards, students could compare articles written
from the iAdventure to what
really happened in the book. I have tried to link all resources needed; however, sometimes getting music sites to work in my building is sometimes too tricky. If this is also the case in your building, you may wish to collaborate with your librarian to get a CD or hook up an MP3 player for students to hear music from this time period. My communication arts team has also made arrangements with our media specialist, also librarian, to have a rolling cart of trade books for further investigation of the 1960's fashion, music, automobiles, US History, etc... Having these resources available is extra handy when students are absent and do not have internet access at home. Back to Top |
| For those of you unsure of an
iAdventure, it is an internet based,
problem solving, research activity in which "students determine the
direction and outcome of a content-rich storyline, using resources
available on the Internet, particularly resources providing real-world
data and primary documents,"
How many
times
have you taken students to the lab to conduct research and felt like,
"They just Googled everything, and didn't get into any depth. Why
did
I do this assignment?" The iAdventure provides students with the
needed structure of Internet researching, yet it still provides a
creative, choice oriented format for them to follow. The
structure of the iAdventure gives
students dilemmas, choices, in which they must make informed decisions
about the next course of action for their character. In The Outsiders
iAdventure, students take on the role of a young, fresh out of college,
reporter who must get to the bottom of a murder in Tulsa,
Oklahoma.
The key here, students must research both options before moving on to
the next dilemma. Research before making a
choice--brilliant!
Students become research experts with an iAdventure because they
traditionally have three opportunities to research. Back to Top |

"Author Susan Hinton was only 16 when she wrote this story of gang violence. Set in the American mid-west, it’s the poignant story of two boys and their efforts to escape the prejudice poverty carries with it in a town where the rich kids can do no wrong. The Outsiders was written over
30 years ago, yet this story of
loyalty, heroism and youth violence still has a contemporary ring. It’s
also a book that provides an opening for dialogue between students and
parents. In fact, many adults may recall reading The Outsiders in
English class." http://www.newspapersineducation.ca/eng/level_7to9/lesson5/lesson5_eng.html
Attacks on the Greasers
are not likely to be reported to the police;
however, the murder of Bob Sheldon, leader of the Socs, has been
printed on the front page of nearly every paper in Oklahoma; most of
the papers have sensationalized his attack. One Oklahoma City news editor, Lou, believes much more
information lies under the lofty opinions of the other high-society
influenced papers. One paper reported, "Bob Sheldon, heroic
American teen, killed ruthlessly by Greasers, punks from the wrong side
of the tracks." Lou knows this is too over the top and has a
baby-faced newby ready to go undercover to find the real story.
Will this young impressionable reporter find who the real killer
is and report exclusively for the Wiedenmann
Harold? Back to Top |
