It doesn't take long for you figure out that Cherry is the most popular girl at school; she was also Bob's girlfriend.  She wears a smile everywhere she goes, but her eyes show an emptiness; they're somehow hollow.  Is it the recent loss of Bob?  What else could bother a teen with so much going for her...a family who gives her everything, friends galore, an acceptance letter to Radford University, a prestigious all girls college in Virginia.

Cherry says to Ponyboy, "Socs have troubles you've never even heard of..."

It must be rough owning your own horse, driving a Corvette, and having parents pay your way through college.  What could be difficult about being a Soc?

Cherry has been reading her copy of Gone With the Wind over and over again.  She's also been catching the Saturday matinée with Vivian Leigh ever since Bob was killed.  She knows that Ponyboy was reading this book to Johnny.  What is it about Vivian's character, Scarlett, that helps Cherry deal with Bob's death and all that's going on with the Greasers? The Soul Selects Her Own Society
by Emily Dickinson

The soul selects her own society,
Then shuts the door;
On her divine majority
Obtrude no more.

Unmoved, she notes the chariot's pausing
At her low gate;
Unmoved, an emperor is kneeling
Upon her mat.

I've known her from an ample nation
Choose one;
Then close the valves of her attention
Like stone.

Analysis 2 (deeper interpretation and thought provoking questions)

While getting to know Cherry, you have noticed that she is slowly closing herself off from her usual friends.  You recently saw her reading The Soul Selects Her Own Society.

How might this poem speak to Cherry about the difficulty of Bob's death and her recent relationship with Ponyboy?

All of Cherry's family and friends are worried about her and keep asking her, "Are you okay?"  She's so tired of them and could almost scream.  What would be a better way to help her deal with Bob's death?

At school, Cherry is like a celebrity, students flock to her at every moment, and teachers seek her out to ask how she is.  You've about given up hope for finding out more about her secret Soc world and Bob Sheldon's death.  That is until today; on the way out to your car after class, Cherry strolls up and out of the blue asks, "Can you take me home?"  This is your big chance.  You gladly open the car door for Cherry and barely get in your side before you notice a large group headed toward your car; you know what they're after, Cherry.  No one leaves her alone these days, and you do feel sorry for her.  So you rev up the engine and burn rubber out of the parking lot.

Cherry is holding a handkerchief with green embroidered letters, RKS (Robert Keith Sheldon), and you notice that tears are gently rolling down her cheeks.  She says, "I really don't want to go home right now; my mom will just be waiting at the door to ask me how I am, how was school, and if I cried today.  Could we drive out to the country for awhile."  You start to feel incredibly bad for Cherry and tell her, "No problem."  You know better than to strike up any conversation right now.  It's best to let her know you're not the prying type.

Once you're out of the city, Cherry turns to you and says, "Why aren't you asking me any questions?"

Alarmed at Cherry's question and afraid she knows who you really are, you respond, "Uhm, what do you mean?"

"It's just that...everyone asks me about Bob (another tear rolls down her cheek), and you have barely said hello to me since that first day you moved in down the street.  Why?"

"I remember what it was like when my dad died.  So many people tried to talk to me; people I didn't even know.  I thought you needed some space.  But I'll listen if you want me to; otherwise, just enjoy a trip out of town for a bit."  She puts her head back against the seat a breathes in a huge breath, like she hasn't been able to breath in months.  Then she says, "How did your dad die?"

"Car accident."

"I'm sorry....Do you know about Bob?"

"Just that he died not too long ago."

"Well, (another deep breath) he was stabbed by someone kind of like a friend.  Bob...he was drunk and mean.  It's all my fault.  I had a bad feeling when he dropped me off at home.  Bob had a far away look in his eyes when he walked me to the door.  I should have made him come inside for a cup of coffee..."  Her voice trails off for what seems like an hour.

Then she starts again with barely a whisper, "In my mind, I know Bob deserved to die for what he did to Johnny and the other Greasers he beat them terribly every chance he got (more deep breaths and tears build up).  But in my heart...I know the Bob that helped me with my algebra every night last year so my parents wouldn't freak out if I got another B+, the Bob who's parents never told him no even when he so desperately needed the boundaries, the Bob who won a track scholarship from Duke, the Bob who talked about moving to Virginia to a smaller college..."  Now the tears flooded down Cherry's cheeks.

A little gas station was on the horizon.  You pull over, buy Cherry a soda, and turn the car around.  Just before doing so, you say, "I think you need to know something about me..."  Then you drive the rest of the way back to town and drop Cherry off at home.
