"Create a Living Room floor plan"

Thanks for taking a closer look at my iAdventure

This iAdventure will compliment your math unit on calculating AREA in square feet and square yards.  Students will browse the internet and make an informed decision as to what TYPE of flooring to put in the living room of their new house.  Next, students will choose their color (always the fun part).  Finally, students will design the floor plan using specific parameters.

Web Guide Information

An iAdventure takes students on a real life web search.  When students are presented with a dilemma, they must search the given web pages BEFORE they make their decision.  To ensure that students are making an informed decision, a web study guide is given.  The web study guide is a necessary part of the web surfing and it is important that the students answer the questions completely before they make their dilemma decision.

Curriculum Standards

Missouri Knowledge Standards

1. Addition, subtraction, multiplication and division; other number sense, including numeration and estimation; and the application of these operations and concepts in the workplace and other situations.

2. Geometric and spatial sense involving measurement (including length, area, volume), trigonometry, and similarity and transformations of shapes.

Missouri Performance Goals

1.4  Use technological tools and other resources to locate, select and organize information

1.10 Apply acquired information, ideas and skills to different contexts as students, workers, citizens and         consumers

3.5  Reason inductively from a set of specific facts and deductively from general premises

3.8 Assess costs, benefits and other consequences of proposed solutions

4.1.  Explain reasoning and identify information used to support decisions

4.6  Identify tasks that require a coordinated effort and work with others to complete those tasks

Resources Needed

*  Web accessible computer for each student or pair of students.
*  Graph paper for scale drawing.
*  Ruler or straightedge
*  Pencil
*  Capability to print documents from the web  (this helps, but is not necessary)

Prior Knowledge

It is helpful if students are familiar with area calculations.  Also, students will create more meaningful floor plans if they know how to draw to scale.
