Steam and Combustion Engines by L.H.
Steam & Cars
Steam cars are very old. They were made after the slow-going combustion cars. They were made to go a lot faster then the combustion cars. They were pretty good cars accept for some draw backs like, puffs of steam that would come out of the end of the cars and blind the driver behind then. They also caused much pollution in the air and people would have to get fresh water refills often. But still they were quiet cars and didn't give off much smell. It also had no confusing gadgets to fiddle around with.
The turbines in steam cars worked like the human stomach. The steam would come in the top part of the engine and then it would go through stationary and rotating blades that were attached to the wheels of the car to make them turn. Then the steam would go out a tube in the end of the car. The engine also worked like a balloon. The air is inside the balloon and if you let it go, all of the air goes flying out one end of the balloon and the rest of the balloon goes flying around the room.
Combustion & Cars
In the begining cars used combustion engines. They were really small and very slow. They used a type of combustion called internal combustion. That means that the steam is used internally or inside the engine. Like in cars, the steam is used in a consector that feeds the steam back into the boiler to be reused.
Trains & Steam
Steam was the first type of train engine to come along. They were used in wars for bringing supplies to the soldiers as well as in modern every day small towns. Big cities didn't see much of the trains until much later. The steam engines were somewhat inconvenient because of their low power, used lots of coal, and lots of refueling. They were big, bulky, and not suitable for long distance travel.
Trains & Combustion
Combustion trains were the most efficent trains. They went for longer periods of time and didn't need so much fuel. So, for that reason they were used for longer distance trips. Combustion engines used external combustion, ex. Boilers. The gas was heated in the boilers by fuel entering cylinders at a fast rate to cause a push. They made their first appearance in 1867.
I have really enjoyed learning about steam and combustion engines. I have learned a lot. I know when I started this project I didn't even know what a combustion or steam engine was.
