Blue-Tongued Skink

Tiliqua scincoides

This Blue-Tongued Skink is sitting on a rock.

The blue-tongued skink's geographic range is all of eastern Australia. He lives out in the open in the summer, and in the winter they dig holes underground. In the classroom, the blue-tongued skink needs a forty to fifty gallon tank. The temperature needs to be seventy to ninety degrees - no lower but, a little higher if needed.

In the wild, the blue-tongued skink eats snails, baby mice, rats, carrots, and peas. In the classroom the blue-tongued skink eats canned dog food. The animal that eats the blue-tongued skink would be the hawk. They start hissing at predators when they try to attack the blue-tongued skink.

Every year they walk for miles to find their mate. They live alone, not in groups. The life span was not recorded , but in the classroom they live up to twenty to thirty years of age. The blue-tongued skink gives birth to live young, rather than laying eggs.

The observations that I made are: that they blink from underneath the eye and it sags when it walks. Skinks lack the ability to change colors. They are easily tamed pets. The blue-tongued skink is one of the most well known skinks.

This Skink has just shed.
