The degu lives in the plains of Chile to the Andes Mountains in Chile. They live in cracks, holes, and burrows. In a classroom, or in a house, they should live in a 20 gallon aquarium with pine woodchips. In a classroom, or at home, you would feed them dog food, bird seed, crackers, and dry bread. In the wild they eat grain seed and different kinds of greens. The things that eat them are humans, birds, and other bigger animals.
Degus can live from 4 to 10 years old. Degus will sometimes live in a group ,but they normally live alone. The mother degu will take care of her babies for about two months. She will protect them and feed them milk until they can live on their own.
Some other interesting information is that they are black and brown with long whiskers and tails. They can dig with their teeth. They can escape by taking off the skin on the end of their tail. Later they eat off the end of the tail with no skin on it. It doesn't bleed very much at all. When they fight they make a very high pitched noise.

This Degu is about to run.
