Savannah Monitor

Varanus exanthematicus

 

This is the savannah monitor. The scientific name of the savannah monitor isVaranus exanthematicus. The monitor lives in Africa around Uganda and Kenya. The monitor also lives in Asia. The monitor likes the hot, arid climate. The monitors eat rodents, mice and rats. They also eat bugs. The predators that the monitor has is hawks and eagles, especially when they are young.

In the classroom, the monitor eats canned dog food. It needs a large aquarium and a supply of water. If the monitor escapes from it's cage it usually gets into heat vents and small areas that are hard to get to.

The monitor lays eggs. The monitor lays it's eggs in sand burrows. Sometimes the monitor lays it's eggs in termite mounds. After the eggs hatch, the monitor comes out. The monitor grows about five to ten times in size within the first year. The monitor is a fairly large lizard. It weighs around three kilograms. The monitor is a very interesting animal and I hope you have learned a little more about it.
