The blue-tongued skink lives in the Australian semi-desert. Its geographic range is Australia. In our classroom its habitat is a 60 gallon tank with wood shavings (not cedar). Its classroom habitat is much safer than its original semi-desert habitat. The dingo and other large meat-eating animals of the Australian semi-desertare are predators of the blue-tongued skink. Its food in the classroom is very different than its food in the wild. In the wild it eats small animals and plant material, but in the classroom it eats canned dog food.
The blue-tongued skink has an unusual life cycle for a reptile. It is born live instead of hatched from an egg, and then it grows to an adult blue-tongued skink. It can live up to 20 years old. Some blue-tongued skinks have lived together for a short period of time but they usually live alone accept for mating season.
The Blue Tongued Skink has an opening on each side of its head for hearing. For protection it's tail can detach from it's body.
