Eastern Spiny Softshell Turtle

This softshell turtle likes to bury himself.

I think that's what he's trying to do.

The animal that I did my report on is commonly called the Softshell Turtle. Their scientific name is Trionyx spiniferus spiniferus. The Softshell Turtle lives in freshwater ponds, lakes, etc., all over the U.S. It is found in warm or temperate environments. The soft shell turtle lives in a freshwater tank and eats floating fish pellets in the classroom. They eat greens and small insects when they are in the wild. Not really anyone but humans will/can eat them.

Softshell Turtles are very independent, but come together when they mate. They bury their eggs under loose dirt and soil and they can live to be up to 100 years old!

Did you know that the Eastern Spiny Softshell Turtle has a purple tummy? They have pointed noses and very long necks. Their skin is very soft and their backbone curves up with the top of their shell instead of going strait from the head to the tail.
