The blue-tongued skink lives in Australia in arid, open areas with a minimal amount of cover. In the wild they would live on plants, mice, insects, and other lizards. In the classroom, the meals consist of canned dog food. The habitat in the room is a fifty gallon tank. Inside it has a large water bowl, a hide-away rock, and pine bedding.
When they are first born there are a lot of predators waiting to eat them. Some of them are spiders, insects, and other lizards.
These lizards are different from other lizards in a lot of different ways. One way is that they give birth to live young, rather than eggs. They have up to around 12 at a time. These lizards are smaller then other lizards. Their life span is 12 to 20 years.
Their body is heavier then some other lizards. They have short, thick tails. They have short legs and tiny feet with small calves. The tongue is blue and the scales are smooth and shiny. Ours is gray with dark blue- black cross bands on his back and tail.
