Degus

Octodon degu

The degu roaming around

Degus live underground. They burrow and make passageways. They are found in Peru, Chili, and the coastal regions of South America. In the classroom, they live in 10 to 20 gallon aquariums. The aquariums also have to be glass, otherwise they would chew through the cage. In the classroom they have a wheel to run on because they are very active during the day.

In the classroom they eat dry dog food and birdseed. In the wild they eat bulbs, tubers, bark, and cactus. Humans, jaguars, wolves, dogs, and foxes eat them.

Degus live in the mother for 90 days or so before being born. Their eyes are closed for two to three days after birth. They usually live in groups of two to six. Degus have orange teeth. It's tail can easily fall off if it is pulled or chewed on.
