HEDGEHOG

Erinaceus albiventris

This hedgehog is finding a comfortable place to sleep.

The African Pygmy Hedgehog is a very "kind" animal. They sleep during the day and eat during the night. They sleep underground or in holes under rocks and logs. This type of hedgehog can be found in western Africa, Southern Somalia, and Tanzania. In our classroom they live in a ten gallon tank with cedar chips for bedding, a small bowl for food, and a box to sleep in. They eat dry cat food in the classroom. They sometimes eat insects, snails, mice, small birds, and snakes in the wild. Some of the animals that eat the African Pygmy Hedgehog are the Great Eagle Owl, the Honey Badger, Striped Hyena, wild dog, and the Jackal.

The African Pygmy Hedgehog may live in a group or alone. It can have up to three to eight young. The parents stay with their babies for six to eight weeks. The babies are in the mothers stomach for about 30 to 40 days. The African Pygmy Hedgehog can run really fast. They have a really good sense of smell, but they are not very intelligent. In our classroom we have five hedgehogs. Hedgehogs can take a bite from a venemous snake and live, or so it is thought. African Pygmy Hedgehogs are good house pets.

This hedgehog is walking around on this hand.
