Lovebird

Agapornis roseicolis

This lovebird is sitting on one of his favorite perches.

The lovebird's scientific name is Agapornis roseicolis. This scientific name is just for the Peach-Faced Lovebird. The Lovebird lives in southwestern Africa. It's wild habitat is in dry areas with leaf shedding trees usually near a large water source. Its classroom habitat is a big cage with many perches and toys. Its food in the wild is grains, seeds, and nectar. Its food in the classroom is a special bird seed mix mixed with cockatiel food. It can get eaten by snakes, bigger birds, and man.

Its life span is about 30 years on average. It does live in groups. That is how they got their name, lovebirds. the reason people called them lovebirds is because of the way they snuggle together on branches.

Lovebirds are egg layers (you should already know that anyway). They lay about 4 to 5 eggs. After the female lays the second egg she will incubate them for 22 days, or until they hatch. Four to 5 weeks after hatching the young will leave the nest, but they will still be fed by the parents. The male lovebird is the one who feeds it most of the time.

Our classroom lovebird's name is Puck. He is about 15 centimeters long, 5 centimeters wide, his beak is about 1.5 centimeters long, and he weighs about 2.5 grams.

I hope you found the lovebird as an interesting topic for a report. Maybe you can write a report on the lovebird someday.
