The rainbow boa lives in the southern part of Central America and the northern part of South America. Those areas are mostly woodland areas, plains, and savannas. In a classroom the rainbow boa would have some sort of wood chips for bedding. You have to be very careful on what kind of wood chips you use because cedar chips will destroy the snake's nervous system. They have a bowl of water and they also have a wood log to crawl on. In a classroom, the snake eats mice and sometimes baby rats.
The things the boa eats in the wild are: mice, baby rats, small birds and some times other snakes , but eating other snakes is very rare. The predators of the boa are: birds bigger than itself, and other snakes of the same and different species.
The rainbow boa can mate any time of the year. To mate, these snakes need to be at least 4-5 feet long [usually 3 yrs or older]. Gestation takes approximately 5 months. Rather than laying eggs, boas give birth to live young. The litters of rainbow boas generally range in size from 10-35. When the babies are born they are 39-59 centimeters long. Around humans the babies are very nippy because they haven't become used to being around humans yet. After two weeks the babies will be able to eat small mammals. In about 2-3 years it will be a full grown adult.
The rainbow boa is very different from other snakes because of the unique skin it has. The skin has thousands of little prisms in its skin that reflect the light into a rainbow color on its skin. That is why its called the rainbow boa.
