Blue tongued skink

(Tiliqua scincoides)

This blue tongued skink is very active.

The blue-tongued skink lives in Australia. There its habitat is an open area with very little cover. In the open area they try to find a little rock to make a home, or they make a burrow. The blue-tongued skink is very good at making burrows. In the classroom, it lives in a 70 gallon tank. In the tank there are wood chips on the ground, a plastic cave for it, and a food and water dish. The blue-tongued skink will eat canned dog food in captivity.

In the wild the blue- tongued skink will eat plants, some insects, and mice. Its predators in the wild are birds of prey like eagles and hawks. Also in some places humans might even eat it. In times of emergency, the blue-tongued skink (as well as an other kinds of skinks) can detach its tail to distract its enemy while it runs away.

The blue-tongued skink lives for about 20 years. When full grown, it becomes 12 to 15 inches long. Mature blue-tongued skinks live alone but infant ones live in groups that will break up when they mature. The blue-tongued skinks have live birth.

Though the blue-tongued skink only lives in Australia, other skinks live all over the world except Antarctica. There are more skinks in the world then any other type of lizard.
