I am studying the degu. The scientific name of the degu is Octodon degus . It's family name is Octontidae.
The habitat of the degus is in burrows in mostly open country, mountains, savannas, and swamps. They try to avoid low-land rain forests. The geographic range of the degus is in the Andes, Peru, Bolivia, Argentina, and Chile.
The classroom habitat of the degu is in a glass aquarium with a water bottle, a wheel to play on, and cedar chips on the bottom. The food in the classroom is dry dog food and bird seed. They also need a good supply of fresh green alfalfa.
Grass and vegetables are what degus eat in the wild. They are strictly vegetarians. Snakes and larger animals might eat the degu.
In captivity, the litters can consist of four to six young. The young are born after a pregnancy of 90 days. The life span of the degu is fifteen years in the wild and ten years in captivity. The mom nurses the young until they don't need to be nursed any longer.
Something interesting about the degus is that if the tail is seized by a predator its fur will slip off in the claws of the attacker, letting the degu escape.
This is just some information about the degu.
